Astatine is the rarest element on Earth; only approximately 25 grams occur naturally on the planet at any given time. Its existence was predicted in the 1800s, but was finally discovered about 70 years later. Decades after its discovery, very little is known about astatine. Indeed, physicists infer many of itsÃâà...

It isn't astatine any longer. This element has a half life of roughly 8 hours, meaning if you could get a clump of it to stay on a table (you can't), half of it would disintegrate in 8 hours, and then every 8 hours another half would go until in a few days, there'd be no astatine on the table. Its nickname should beÃâà...

Astatine can only be found on Earth following the decay of thorium and uranium. It is estimated that less than 30 g of astatine is present in the Earth's crust, only very few ̵̉g of astatine have been produced artificially so far, and elemental astatine has not been viewed by the naked eye due to its instability.
