 Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect

The

Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect

(SZ effect) has been predicted by Sunyaev & Zeldovich (1969, 1972, 1980):

They showed, that the passage of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) through a hot electron cloud would distort the spectrum of the radiation. Due to the high energy of the electrons, and the homogeneity and isotropy of the CMB, the photons gain energy.

The new study confirmed that the missing ordinary matter can be discovered in the form of filaments of these diffuse gasses, which link the galaxies. In order to detect the gasses, both teams used the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, a phenomenon which takes place after leftover photons of the Big Bang's glow ...

"Unlike all other methods that are probing small clumps within the wind, the Sunyaev-Zeldovich Effect is sensitive to the bulk of the wind, the extremely hot plasma that's filling the volume of the wind, and is completely undetectable using any other technique," she said. To pinpoint when dark energy became important, SPT will use a phenomenon called the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect, which distorts the CMB as it passes through the hot gas of intervening galaxy clusters.
