Fischer had been wanted by the US government since 1992 after violating sanctions against Serbia when he played his match vs. Boris Spassky in Belgrade. The Icelandic parliament voted Fischer full citizenship as a way of thanking him for putting Iceland on the map during his 1972 match with Spassky.
