Using acoustic imaging, Berge detected zooplankton as deep as 80 meters fleeing laterally when they sensed light. He also caught them scattering up to 500 meters away in the surface layers of the sea. This means plankton tows and water samples taken from research ships in the Arctic night may haveÃâà...

Understanding the mechanics of megathrusts can help scientists more accurately estimate the risks facing local populations. Scientists used advanced acoustic imaging technology to survey the corrugated ridges, or grooves, along the interface of the two plates. The patterns are similar to ridges found at theÃâà...

“By combining opto-acoustic imaging and traditional ultrasonic imaging in such a novel manner, the system can employ just one ultrasonic transducer to detect all three ultrasound pulses and use the same set of analog and digital electronics to acquire and process both types of signals,” he said.

Edwards worked with a team of geophysicists at UC Santa Cruz, the U.S. Geological Survey, the University of Texas-Austin, and McGill University to obtain 3-dimensional imagery of the fault interface using cutting-edge acoustic imaging technology. The long grooves, or corrugations, they observed alongÃâà...

The MM-Wave Group
The MM-Wave Group also carry out research in Acoustic Interferometry and Imaging techniques. At first appearance, acoustics seems an odd companion to mm-waves, but the two areas have a lot in common. In each case we are dealing with wide-bandwidth signals with wavelengths of the order of millimetres to centimetres. The group uses an anechoic chamber in our Physics building. The main project so far has been to develop a novel way to measure the imaging performance of hi-fi loudspeakers....
