Richard P. Formica

was commissioned in 1977 upon completion of ROTC at Providence College and graduation from Bryant College in Smithfield, Rhode Island. He has since graduated from the Field Artillery Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, and Cannon Battery Officer Course. He is a 1990 graduate of the Army Command and General Staff College, where he also earned a Master of Military Arts and Sciences Degree. He graduated from the National War College in 1997 and also earned a Masters Degree in National Security Strategy.



Brigadier General Formica assumed command of the III Corps Artillery in August 2002. His previous commands include B Battery 2d Battalion 33d Field Artillery in Neu Ulm, Germany; Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2d Armored Division Artillery in Fort Hood, Texas; 4th Battalion 42d Field Artillery, 4th Infantry Division; and the 3rd Infantry Division Artillery in Fort Stewart, Georgia.



His staff assignments include S3 of Cadet Basic Training at the U.S. Military Academy; Field Artillery Intelligence Officer for the 2d Armored Division; S3 of 1st Battalion 3d Field Artillery; Executive Officer of 3rd Battalion 1st Field Artillery; Fire Support Officer for the 2d Brigade, 3d Infantry Division; DIVARTY S3 and DFSCORD in the 3rd Infantry Division. He served on the Army Staff as Chief, Programs Team, Force Development Directorate, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans. He served on the Joint Staff as the Assistant Deputy Director for Politico-Military Affairs (Europe), J-5, Washington, DC.



His awards include the Distinguished Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal (with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), the Army Achievement Medal (with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters), and both the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Army Staff Identification Badges.
